The Department of Hydrobiology’s activity covers revealing the life history, population trends and survival strategies of vulnerable aquatic macroinvertebrate species with special emphasis on the consequences of climate change; exploring biodiversity of running water ecosystems using traditional and integrative taxonomy; understand the effect of flow regime and species interactions on stream and lake biota; behavioural studies on aquatic invertebrates under extreme environmental conditions: experiments in artificial mesocosm.
MU is the second largest university in the Czech Republic. In many research topic, including ecological research of intermittent rivers, MU is a leader in Central Europe region. The Group for research of intermittent streams was established in the Department of Botany and Zoology in 2012 during the Biodrought project. A team of experienced freshwater ecologists of the Hydrobiology group is investigating the responses of different biotic groups inhabiting intermittent streams (aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, fish, terrestrial vertebrates, algae, vascular plants) in the field and also in controlled laboratory experiments.

Division of Lake-catchment Interaction and Manipulation and Key Laboratory of Watershed Geographic Sciences will be involved in the project. The two departments focus on the major scientific issues in ensuring the watershed ecological safety and sustainable development in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River and watersheds of major rivers and lakes in the humid southern region of China.
